random rant:
Necessity isn't the mother of all invention...
We sure as hell didn't think we needed flight when we came up with it. We wanted to go someplace where 'everyone' said wasn't possible..."to go where no man has gone before", whether its in exploration, academics, religion, music, art, physical accomplishments, etc.... People are still trying to be the fastest runners in the world, every year....
Necessity isn't the mother of all inventions, ambition is. And this is important to point out, I think. If you thought of something new thats cool and want it done, then ideally, that desire shouldn't be hampered by asking if its necessary or not...( realistically, safety and practicality matter =P. )
We don't invent things because its needed, we just hold onto the inventions that we feel are necessary ( and usually pick the ones that are deemed safest and most practical).

Kalhastra
I am modeling the twin kingdoms loosely after singapore, an area formed by settlers and immigrants who have suffered/escaped disasters, wars and other conflicts caused by interracial hatred, and influence of the demons. The place great importance on commerce and trade, and keep many laws attached to trade loose to keep things lucrative. But because of the history of its founding, the locals and the government is very sensitive to interracial tension, individuals showing particular disdain for another race will be quitely discouraged from leaving trade quarters, and definitely not be allowed to settle inthe kingdom. while everyone is welcome to visit and trade, no outsider will be allowed into local politics, trade arm of the government is effective enough to handle everything. I'll use this "veil" surrounding the inner politics of the hastrian kingdoms to figure out more details later =P. The major civilian communities would be tieflings, half-elfs, humans, halflings. The king is chosen through a process I will figure out later.
The military influence of the kingdoms is kept local to avoid unwanted attention on a greater political level, but its very strong. A standing army full of seasoned soldiers from fighting monsters is the kingdom's main defense force on land, but its mostly defensive with the exception of small expeditionary commando type groups thats sent out to investigate things, has a lot of Dragonborn, humans, goliaths, and elfs. The navy which is much larger, is handled seperately by the state's arcane ministry with mostly humans, tieflings, and half elfs.
A large part of the forest belongs to an elf (clan?), they actually moved here after most of the other races, but since most of the kingdom's settlements are coastal and the forests are barely touched, they set themselves up inthe forest. They belong to the kingdom, and visit the cities when they need to but otherwise stay mostly inthe forest, which is governed completly by them . Similar deal with the goliaths in the mountains. Forests are also full of other shit too, outside the elf territories its mostly unknown as to whats in there. There is a very very old dragonborn clan that roams around the northern parts of the forest, but don't ever leave the forest as a clan, they've been there since before arkhosia formed. ( variable source for possible story branches into old dragonborn diety being there later?) Anyway thats all inthe eastern kingdom, in comparison I think western kingdom will be mostly rural, I'll be working on that side now, specially as I build an encounter for kevin, troy, hoang. (they need a fourth I think btw)
